Choke Canyon State Park TX to Lake Corpus Christi State Park TX  We woke up to dense fog. You couldn't even see the lake. At 8:30am there was a bird watching program.  Fortunately it was a viewing area. They set out oranges, filled the feeders and the birds lined up. If it had been  a walk in the woods we couldn't have seen a thing. I saw my first Green Jay, very exotic looking. We also spotted a Ladder Backed Woodpecker  And a Golden Fronted Woodpecker  Other sitings included  Hundreds of red wing Blackbirds. Dozens of Great Tailed Grackles. Cardinals  Black tufted titmouse White Tipped Dove  White Winged Dove Starling  And a Great Egret  Before leaving we took one of the hiking trails where we sited a Long Billed Thrasher but heard lots more birds than we saw. A beautiful park. On our way out we mailed a letter at the post office in Calliham. It looked abandoned. There was no ...

Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park KY to Mounds State Park IN  Dewey wants to make some miles today and stay ahead of a possible storm. We skipped our after breakfast walk. I changed the settings on Waze to allow interstate highways. I69 here we come.  Indiana is about daffodils and Bradford pear trees. The whole countryside is green and white. I hope that's a good omen for the MSU Auburn game this afternoon.  I'm looking forward to watching spring arrive all over again when we get home. There is a tornado watch tonight for the area around Mounds State Park where we are staying tonight. Dewey chose a camp site without trees and close to the bathrooms which is the shelter area for the park. I located the "closest  sports bar" on Google and we headed for Monty's bar. What a blast from the past. We were the only people in the bar that didn't know every other person in the bar. They were all very friendly, and very drunk. Debbie kept trying...

Pickwick Landing State Park TN to Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park After coffee we walked the beautiful well marked 2.5 mile Island Loop Trail which was again a peninsula, not an island. Does no one take geography anymore? Signs along the trail informed us about the area. Over 500 families had to be moved in the 1930's when the dam was built by the TVA to bring electricity to rural areas. The only evidence left of these homes are some abandoned cisterns used to collect water. As far back as 1847, between where we are standing and the boat launch across the water stood The White Sulfer Springs Hotel and Resort. It had a separate bowling alley for men and for women and held regular dances. It may have been used as a hospital during the civil war. It was burned down and built back but ultimately demolished to make way for the dam.  At the tip of the peninsula there were empty bottles and cans. I wish I had brought a garbage bag with me. I get obsessed with wanting to pick it up. I w...
